CLIPPING THE LÖWCHEN
Use a 1mm clipper blade and clip against the lie of the hair.
The remaining hair will lie covering the clip lines.
The hindquarters are clipped forwards to a line behind the last rib and the naval. The front legs are clipped up to a line through the elbow joint outside,
And inner, a bit higher up into the armpit to prevent matting with leg movement. Clipped down leaving the joints covered, straight on front legs, diagonal on rear. Feet fully clipped out to at least a ½ inch above central foot pad.
Clip approximately ½ the tail leaving all the hair falling forwards.
The hair will part but avoid a deliberate combed parting, especially at neck and shoulders to keep the 'lions mane' outline.

The traditional clip of the Löwchen, seen in the show ring, shows the glamour of the long coat at the front and allows the well developed hindquarter muscles and the free flowing movement of the legs, which are characteristic of the breed, to be seen. Regular grooming is necessary and the longer the coat the more risk of matt's or tangles developing if left too long. Many Löwchen sold as pets have their coat shortened all over into the 'teddy bear clip' and like this very little hair drops out, but however short the coat during coat change, particularly during the puppy to adolescent and adolescent to adult stages, the hair comes out from the roots and a complete daily groom is necessary. Grooming should include regular attention to ears, teeth and nails. After a walk to reduce the risk or barbed or sticky seeds giving rise to problems give a quick check to eyes. Grass seeds can be a menace.
